چکیده

Spatio-temporal resolution pyramids are well suited for scalable video codecs. An oversampled pyramid decomposition can be incorporated eeciently into either open-loop or closed-loop pyramid encoders. In this paper, we discuss two diierent motion compensation (MC) techniques suitable for open-loop as well as for closed-loop pyramid coders. We compare the performance of each technique to both pyramid coders for the case of equal quantization noise in all resolution layers. Simulation results show that in this case all schemes have similar performance. By allowing higher quantization noise in the predicted frame it can be seen that bandpass MC performs up to 1 dB better.

Low bit-rate video coding with implicit multiscale segmentation

In this paper, we report on our efforts toward developing a multiscale segmentation based video compression algorithm aimed at very low bit-rate applications such as video teleconferencing and video phones. We introduce novel techniques for multiscale segmentation based motion compensation and residual coding. Our region based forward motion compensation strategy (in terms of direction of motio...

Pyramid Decompositions and Hierarchical Motion Compensation

Block-based motion compensation (MC) is a fundamental component of most video compression algorithms; however, the \optimal" full search is computationally expensive and, as a result, fast search methods are preferred. This paper investigates the use of Gaussian and Laplacian pyramids in fast hierarchical MC algorithms. We compare the two types of pyramids as a function of di erent decimation a...

Coding Gain of Intra/Inter-frame Subband Systems

Typical image sequence coders use motion compensation techniques in connection to coding of the motion compensated difference images (interframe coding). Moreover, the difference loop iis initialized from time to time by intraframe coding of images. It is therefore important to have a procedure that allows to evaluate the performance of a particular coding scheme: coding gain and rate-distortio...

Robust image and video coding with pyramid vector quantisation

Most current image and video coding standards use variable length codes to achieve compression, which renders the compressed bitstream very sensitive to channel errors. In this paper, image and video coders based on Pyramid Vector Quantisation (PVQ) and using only fixed length codes are proposed. Still image coders using PVQ in conjunction with DCT and wavelet techniques are described and their...
